The skull is a bony structure that encloses and protects the brain, as well as the sensory organs of vision, hearing, and smell. It is made up of several bones that are connected by suture joints. The main bones of the skull include the frontal bone, which forms the forehead and the roof of the nasal cavity; the parietal bones, which form the sides and top of the head; the temporal bones, which contain the auditory ossicles and the zygomatic bones, which form the cheekbones. The occipital bone forms the back of the skull and the sphenoid bone helps to support the brain and form the base of the skull. The mandible, or lower jawbone, is also considered part of the skull. The skull also contains numerous openings, such as the orbits, or eye sockets, and the nasal and oral cavities.
